Perspective. How do you see it?

I saw this on fb and thought I would share.

One day a very wealthy father took his on a trip to the country for the sole purpose of showing his how it was to be poor.

They spent a few days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. After their return from the trip, the father asked his how he liked the trip.

"It was great, Dad," the replied.

"Did you see how poor people can be?" the father asked.

"Oh Yeah," said the ,

"So what did you learn from this trip?" asked the father.

The answered, "I saw that we have one and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, and they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them. "

The boy's father was speechless…

Then the added, "It showed me just how poor we really are."

Too many time we forget what we have and concentrate on what we don't have. What is one person's worthless object is another's prize possession.

Sometimes it takes the perspective of a to remind us what is important.

Your thoughts?

I grew up poor but never realized it until one Xmas we came home to find a food box on the doorstep. My [widowed] mum was visibly upset that I saw it but I didn't mind. I was as happy as I could be under the circumstances and she always did a great job being both mum and dad.

Drop in and visit my blog sometime, but you'll probably regret it

I understand what you mean. It is not easy being both mother and father. She raised you well.

I grew up quite poor on a farm, but did not "think" I was poor or feel I was poor. My best friend was quite spoiled in comparison and I was jealous of some things she had, but never felt like I was really missing out on stuff. I DID grow up with a solid background and a huge appreciation for things as simple as indoor plumbing and insulation in the walls. My idea of being "rich" now is having carpet on my floors .... we had ice-cold linoleum floors everywhere, and no heat on the second floor. I have wall to wall carpet and am rich as hell <3

I know what you mean. I moved home for a few years and in to the old farmhouse I was born in. no heat on the second floor and still had the original windows from when it was build in 1908. The house does have indoor plumbing now as well... lol

Makes you wonder why rich people don't give away their money if it's so great to be poor...

Thank you for sharing this. I used to guide "wealthy" clients all over Alaska and it was quite obvious that so many of them lived sad, shallow lives. One day, though, a client said something that resonates with this story.... he said: "I'm basically paying $2,000/day for you to show me what you do own your own every day... do you realize how much I envy you?"

Thanks again for the perspective.

You are quite welcome. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your comment.

It is true that we do not always take from a situation or a view the important things or the lessons to be learned. The beauty that is in front of us. I do wish more of us could learn to see life from the perspective in which true wealth is not measured by a bank account.
