Being in a Funk… getting out of the rut

It is easy to get in to a rut with life sometimes. We get in to a routine and before we know it, the routine becomes so, well routine, we don't know what else to do. By this time we feel stuck. So what do we do?

I have been there a few times. In a way I am there now, although, I realize it and am working on other things to get out of it.

My life this past winter has been work, chat, blogs, bed. Get up the next day and do it all over again. So I mixed it up a little and added the gym. I was doing great, then got sick. I was off work for almost two weeks with what started as a head cold which turned in to sinus and throat infection, which turned in to laryngitis and then lung infection.

My work is using my voice a LOT, so having laryngitis was not a good thing. And since I work such whacked hours, it is hard to visit with friends and family. Hell, I have a hard time to get shopping done.

So tonight I am in the chat room chatting with my chat buddies and someone mentions about being in a funk. Someone else mentions about being in one last summer. The first chatter asks how to get out of it. Second chatter says "realizing what it was and Irish stubbornness" I commented "realizing what you can and can't change".

I am the type of person who very rarely gets bored with life, I try to find the good in the things around me. Even if those things are the same things day in and day out. I try to keep things interesting. Although sometimes that is hard to do, especially if you find yourself in a rut. Sometimes you feel like you are just spinning your wheels and not getting anywhere. Realizing what it is, is a big step towards changing it. Finding something to do that is different is sometimes not so easy.

I started reading a fellow chatters blog last fall and he directed me to a few others. I have enjoyed reading them and commenting where I feel comfortable and when I think I may have something to contribute to the topic.

I also started writing again over the winter. Something I thank my fellow chatter and friend, cwazywabbit for. Writing is something I had done for years and got away from, this past winter I got back to doing it almost daily again. I find it helps me when I get in those "ruts" and allows me to see things from a different perspective. Something about putting thoughts in print. Gets it out of the head and on the page, being able to see it and not just think it.

So my question is what do you do when you find yourself in a "rut"? How do you get out of it?

Men experience entirely different rut's.Funk to me is just something like a cold or a fever coming on.

Using more than all the road!

take a short trip or getaway to shake up your environment that you're in a rut in. That seems to also give you a sense of reward for too much of the "nose to the grindstone" and helps to remotivate you to get back to the everyday routines and responsibilities...

Sometimes finances don't allow for costly getaways. I agree with rewarding ourselves for working hard to accomplish something. I just recently bought a new camera as a reward for quitting smoking. I like to go to the beach and listen to the waves crashing on the shore at high tide. Thankfully I live near one and have the ability to do that.

Lately I just accept that I'm in a rut.... trying too hard to get out of one only seems to make it worse for me. Like when your car drifts off the side of the road, they tell you to steer smoothly back on instead of jerking the wheel. Accepting that change is imminent works both ways and allows me to get through the wobbly times.

btw, i noticed you're in St John, how lucky you are to live in such a gorgeous area! I was there while on "girlcation" last summer and camped at Rockwood Park.

You are correct in making large changes suddenly are not always the best. I find sometimes it is just the smallest of changes that can make a big difference. Like for me adding the gym to my daily routine. Which I have to get back to because I do actually miss it.

I have not always lived in Saint John, I am a transplant. I lived here for many years during and after college. Then moved home for 12 years, I have been back for almost two years. It is a beautiful area and I love being near the water. And there is so much history here.

If I get into a rut I try to think of something I really enjoy doing and then I do it. A change of pace and doing something fun is the key for me.

You are correct there, it has to be something you enjoy doing to keep your interest. Like for me today I am heading out to my cousins to get my water, which is something I do on a regular basis. However, today I am taking a different route and my camera, never know when I might see something I want to get a shot of.

I have been in funks from time to time. For me to get out of it I make myself do something different. It could be as simple as going to a different place than I normally go to for my morning coffee. The change of scenery can help at times. I have even just gone on a long drive with no particular destination in mind.

Thanks for stopping by, I have to agree with you on those responses. Lots of times for me it is just doing one thing a little differently than before. I have gone for a drive with no particular destination in mind myself. I usually end up at the shore so I can listen to the waves. The change of scenery can help greatly. Sometimes it is having a conversation with someone who has gone through a similar situation. Seeing things from a different perspective.
