We built it

Ayn Rand was dead wrong. We are an interconnected society. We all built it, and we need all of us to keep building it. No one is an island of self made men unless you want to live like Robinson Crusoe on an island. Even he had a helper named Friday...

So the GOP is dead wrong...

Even since President Obama's statement was edited to fit the GOP narrative, they have used a series of small business folks who claimed "they have built it" all by themselves, from the ground up.

But as usual, all is not as it seems. When the president said, we are not an island but are all inter-connected and inter-dependent: like the business that depends on good roads to get its products at a given destination on time or the business which would fold if no one patronized it; or still that start-up company that enjoys federal grants or tax exemptions to grow--Republicans pounced, accusing Obama of saying folks didn't built their business.

With that running theme, businesswoman Sher Valenzuela, who is also running for office in Delaware, was sheduled to speak at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fl., on Tuesday night, to extoll her personal triumph of "I build it." But did she?

She is one of the GOP's shining example of "we built this," thus their plan to trot her out at the RNC but according to documents made public online, Valenzuela received millions of federal dollars for her "I built this" business.

On her Facebook page, the married Latina mother proudly advertises her business and job description as Co-Owner of First State Manufacturing, "where the 21st Century Solutions for Industrial Upholstery - 'If the wheel needed reinventing, we'd be the people to do it!'"

Enthusiasm and confidence to spare, which are two very important ingredient to any successful venture and Ms. Valenzuela seems to have both. What she didn't have is the capital to do it all on her own so she reportedly accepted $17 million in government loans and contracts on several occasions, which puts the "H" in high hypocrisy for the GOP.

According to Media Matters, the Lieutenant governor hopeful pocketed more than $2 million in federal loans and an additional $15 million in contracts. Is that what "we built it" all by ourselves looks like?

There is a Sher Valenzuela Parody Site that Blasts the GOP's 'We Built It' Theme and it just may be one of the GOP's election year nightmare, for it lists, in detail, State Manufacturing's government alleged "pay-out" over the years.

The opening line on the dummy site reads, "

"Year-by-Year

When you look at the history of First State Manufacturing year-by-year, you can see how government has been a faithful partner in helping us build our business."

The GOP is either a walking contradiction or a study in hypocrisy for this notion that all businesses built themselves independently of any assistance starkly contrast with their "job creators are businesses who need the Bush era tax break to survive."

Which is it: "we built it" or we built it with the help of Uncle Sam sometimes?

I cannot bother to watch such drivel. I am not big on any conventions...

Actually we do need government to succeed. Try Somalia or Syria right now as an example of what not to do. By taxes and government we provide services we cannot easily buy in the private sector. Like police, fire fighters, public roads, public schools, public libraries, public pools, public sanitation systems, lighting on roads, electric grid, traffic controllers for airplanes, managing the spectrum for radio, tv, mobile phones, space exploration, public colleges, regulating financial companies, FDIC, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, national defense, veterans benefits, national cemeteries, justice system, immigration system, bankruptcy court, FDA, FAA, NTSB, etc....

The business owners could not focus on making a lot of money without the government services that make it possible. If you want to make it on your own move to a deserted island and see how much fun that life can be. You cannot sell anything to anyone unless they have money to buy it. And the currency you use to buy and sell stuff, you did not make that either. Try operating without a currency, or banking system...

When Lehman Brothers failed the financial system froze and the government stopped the panic. You did not build that either... How many private companies offered to guarantee all the money in all the money market accounts? The Federal Reserve did that and you did not build that... When GM and Chrysler were about to fold, how many private companies agreed to provide the financing? Zero. The TARP program did it and made a profit on it! Saving about two million jobs. You did not build that either and Mitt would not have done it so he said and still says. You business owners did not build lots of things you use all the time. Arrogance is not a good thing. You did not build the clean air you breathe, but you did pollute it and the government required you to stop polluting it through the EPA and Cal Air quality board. Without government we would be like Eastern Europe and China with toxic waste and pollution destroying us... Prefer lead poisoning, mercury poisoning or settle for cyanide?

The other irritating part about the racist rants and name calling, is the total lack of respect for the President. Obama has faults and has made mistakes. As has everyone. He is obviously smart, caring and a lot more careful to avoid more wars than George W. Bush... The name calling and vicious stupid comments just shows how juvenile and stupid his critics can be...
