Enough gardening for me.

Enough gardening for me.

I love a well kept garden. Beautiful lawns and stunning flowers.
Alas, I was born with a black thumb instead of a green one, and the only things that grow well for me are weeds.

Now that my has finished Uni and has a bit more free time, he decided to poison the weeds I had been nurturing in the bricks that make up our patio.

They had been left long enough to die a slow death, so he started to pull them out today. He was only able to spend an hour or so on the task, as he had to pop out.
I said I would continue the job for a while.

After removing some weeds and some unwanted grass, I discovered two rose bushes in pots that had been long lost to this world.
Seeing how roses are my favorite flower, and that they had managed somehow to survive my lack of TLC, I thought I would surprise them and give them a drink of rainwater that had filled my watering can.

In no time at all, I saw what I thought might have made it's home in the watering can....a Red Back Spider, and rather a large one at that.
I was feeling brave because I was wearing gardening gloves (they can sometimes be fatal, or at least give a nasty bite, and would probably require a trip to the hospital),so continued watering my darling roses.
As soon as the watering can was empty, I gently put it down and rushed to get the insect spray, emptying a lot of the can onto the spider. When it tried to get onto the handle, I hit it with the broom, rendering it quite dead.
I left it dangling in it's web to show my how brave I had been, and how big it was.

My back was starting to ache from bending down for so long, I thought I would attack some of the ivy growing on the fence.
I cut some of it back and was moving to attack a rather long piece, but didn't look where I was going first, and yes....walked straight into a spiders web. Next thing I know, there is a black eight legged thing hanging down in front of my face.
Think this was only a harmless garden spider, but those of you that read my blog about the Huntsman spider, you will know I hate SPIDERS.
So I started the famous spider dance, and decided that was enough gardening for one day.

Yes, I have hung up my gardening gloves for the day, remembering to turn the top over a few times and put a peg on it, so as no spider will be able to crawl inside for a nasty surprise next time the gloves are worn.

Oh Charmaine, you have broken my heart.

I love hedgehogs and have a huge collection of them (thanks to my sister in England that won't stop sending them to me. They are taking over my house).

We don't have then here.

I agree with not liking rats. I can't believe how people keep them as pets. Have they not seen the movie 'Willard?'

Now there's a funny thing. I can't think of anything more theraputic than gardening.

So I wonder what works for you now then.

Sir Teezalot

WAR IS ABSURD

I'm not a big fan of pests and rodents myself. i dislike running into a spiders web but I'm not as jumpy at spiders as I am roaches and bugs. They simply gross me out. Good luck on getting the gardening done. You will be happy once it's completed.

we have spiders here but none of the nasty variety...unless you count the ones hiding in the produce in the grocery stores...not long ago, a woman found a black widow in a bunch of grapes.

i have a very green thumb and can grow most anything...except hair on top of my head...sigh..

i smiled at the 'famous spider dance'...ok i laughed..

The Red Back spider is quite fascinating in that when mating, the males will often raise up their abdomens and actually allow the female to eat them(!!!!)
Thank God I wasn't born a spider is all I can say!

Hey, come and view my blog: mygentlecaress It's complete crap but come on over anyway

No spider is safe from me, just as long as I have a can of insect spray and a broom. Don;t want to get too close to them.

Are you sure you can't think of Anything more therapeutic than gardening?

Sure I can find something to do while my son finishes the gardening for me.

I always make sure any spider I kill is "quite dead." Don't want the nasty ones chasing me.

You would have had a real belly laugh if you would have seen me do the 'spider dance' in person.

Seems like the Red Back is not the only spider to eat it's male after mating.

Come on, I'm sure you like being eaten.

So much for having a male around the place.
If my son sees a spider around the house, he calls me and I have to deal with them.

Don't know what happened to the spider that was hanging down in front of my eyes, so don't know if I squashed it or not. Think the dance was enough to scare it away.
