 My recommendation don't be adventurous in new surroundings, plan out your day, search out hotels, google map your restaurants, buy an extra cell phone (reasonably priced telcel for local reception), google a local sporting store and purchase a 3inch tactical knife for self-protection since pepper spray is out lawed in many parts of mexico. Stay in areas with lots of light, and be conscious of people. Mexico is no longer a place for american tourism

 I'm pretty sure that for a weeks visit you can't becoma a high profile target for the cartels. And the cartels don't kidnapp and kill just anyone, only those who have it coming to them and i'm pretty sure you are not on their list. But there are also smaller gangs that do tend to target other types of people. Anyway, I have been going and coming to Mexico since 2000 or before and have never seen anything of the sort, not that it does not happen but I'm just stating never seen it first hand. I do suggest being carefull on what to wear jewelry wise and dress casual. Do not attract attention!!!. By the way, Mexico is the most populated city in the world, so anything can happen there, not that it doesn't happen anyplce else, its just the way big cities are. Keep visiting Mexico, very beautifull party city too, just take your precautions.
